With the help of Inter-lux/Whitegoods downlights, the sleek and contemporary look of the library at the University of Baltimore appeals to its young students. The Abell Foundation sponsored a competition for the job of redesigning and renovating the 55,337 square-foot Langsdale Library to support the needs of its growing and evolving student population. Six architectural firms participated in the competition and Behnisch Architekten of Boston was selected as the winner.

This project began in late 2016 and was completed two years later with much of the original building’s structure preserved. The goal was to retain the qualities of the library that were still effective and set up the facility for future success. Renovation objectives included a reorganization of the interior and improvements to the building’s energy efficiency. A new feature is a glass atrium, which increases the flow of natural daylight and provides an open connection to all floors. Upon completion, the building was renamed Robert L. Bogomolny Library for UB’s former president.

Energy-efficient GDL and ProTools downlights from Whitegoods add visual interest to the walls of the staircase within the atrium and help illuminate the pathway. The ProTools 4” downlight line is available in a wide range of options that include round and square and bezel and plaster trim. Numerous covers and accessories allow specifiers the freedom to design for all spaces and environments with one congruent range of luminaires.

The Whitegoods General Downlight (GDL) is a 2.4” aperture, high-efficiency downlight for general illumination of corridors, conference rooms and other spaces. GDL delivers high-angle illumination with the flush lens version or low brightness with the regressed cone. Standard options include wet location and low ceiling clearance with integral, dimmable drivers.
University of Baltimore students now benefit from a unique and updated library. The Whitegoods lighting enhances the architecture while keeping the focus on the creative design.
